Wat Phra Yai Pattaya (The Big Buddha)
The stunning site and the ornate and detailed architecture combine to make Wat Phra Yai Pattaya one of the most popular cultural attractions in Pattaya, if not the entire coastal Chonburi region.
The Big Buddha, the main attraction of this temple, looks down on a spectacular view of the coast from its hilltop position midway between Pattaya and Jomtien. The 18-meter-tall gold-painted statue is surrounded by seven other Buddha statues in different poses, signifying the days of the week. People visit the temple to pray to the statue that represents the day they were born. The staircase leading down from the Big Buddha is equally impressive, with golden railings resembling two seven-headed snakes running down the hill.
Wat Yansangwararam
Wat Yansangwararam has existed only since 1976. It was built as a Buddhist monastery under the royal patronage of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. It has been expanded to include 400 hectares of land used for royal development projects.
The beautiful site by the side of a lake is divided into four zones, with Zone 1 housing the temple’s most important buildings and structures, including the tall, graceful, and picturesque Phra Boromthat Chedi Maha Chakripipat Stupa. The monastery is located northeast of Bang Saray and can be reached by taking route 1008 inland from route 3.
Nacha Sa Thai Chue Shrine
This spectacular Chinese-style shrine was built along Leap Chai Road from Hao Sammuk to Ang Sila in northern Chonburi province. The exterior of the colorful four-story shrine features 2,840 dragon sculptures, making it the most famous shrine in Chonburi province. The shrine is also known as Wihan Thepsathit Phra Kiti Chalerm, meaning the residence of all gods.
Ang Sila
The small fishing village of Ang Sila, along the coast near Nacha Sa Thai Chue Shrine, is culturally significant for two reasons. The town and bustling fish market provide visitors with a glimpse into the past lifestyles of many towns along the eastern seaboard.
The second reason is that the village was once known for the stonemasons who carved the local basalt into mortars and pestles for use in kitchens all over Thailand. Some masons are still at work today, and their handicrafts can be found in many of the shops in Ang Sila.
